This year, European visitors to the southern coast are charting a new course, moving their interests from the sun-soaked beaches to the open sea.
Sailing has become the latest craze, visibly transforming the Costa del Sol's harbours as more enthusiasts choose the freedom of the sea over the sands. According to the Marinas de Andalucía association, one of the most frequented routes is between the Balearic Islands and the Costa del Sol. Marina occupancy rates have mirrored those of the hotel industry, standing at an impressive 85%, a notable 5% increase from last year.
Foreign sailors, in particular, have significantly boosted the demand for marina berths, surpassing their Spanish counterparts. Ports and nautical clubs affiliated with the Marinas de Andalucía association, such as IGY Málaga Marina, Benalmádena Marina, Fuengirola Marina, Puerto Banús, Estepona Marina, La Duquesa Marina, and the sailing clubs of El Candado and Estepona, have all reported this surge in international interest.
