Golf Clubs in Sotogrande.

Sotogrande is home to the world famous Valderrama course, host to the Volvo Masters and Ryder Cup. This is also home to the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, which was founded in 1964 and designed by Robert Trent Jones. These, however, are not the only local courses worth visiting. Below you will find links to Sotogrande golf courses as well as golf throughout the Costa de la Luz and even Andalucia.

ALMENARA GOLF CLUB

Almenara, which opened in 1998, has three nine-hole loops, each of which is the brainchild of local architect Dave Thomas, and also provides very extensive practice and teaching facilities. A top class hotel, professionals shop and restaurant complete the amenities at one of the Coast’s up-and-coming golfing venues.

LA CAÑADA GOLF CLUB

La Cañada is a fitting tribute to the people of Guadiaro who became golf addicts overnight with the emergence of Sotogrande.

The full length Trent Jones course is located in the hills adjacent to Valderrama and is open to some wind. The long first hole sets the tone for a tough round of golf and the 4th is a trek into the unknown with no view of the green until the third shot.

LA RESERVA DE SOTOGRANDE

This modern course meandering through two picturesque valleys was opened in 2004, and since then has become recognised as one of the area’s most prestigious golf clubs. It perfectly complements other top clubs in Sotogrande, including Valderrama, and offers golfers magnificent views all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea.

Luxury Projects at the La Reserva Club include:

La Reserva Golf & Country Club

The course is 6,700 metres long, with expansive and wide fairways and greens. Five driving tees are available on each hole, and the course is set up with several water and bunker challenges.

The NH Collection Open (an event co-sanctioned by both the European and European Challenge Tours) was held at La Reserva de Sotogrande in April 2014.

Designed by leading international golf course architect Cabell B. Robinson, who was originally mentored by Robert Trent Jones (creator of Royal Sotogrande) and has also been responsible for such other gems as the nearby Finca Cortesín and Royal Palm in Marrakesh, La Reserva de Sotogrande is located in a majestic setting overlloking the sea, Andalucian hills and Straits of Gibraltar.

The original clubhouse was built in 2003 and was designed to incorporate key architectural motifs that blended Andalucian and historic Moorish influences such as horseshoe arched windows, internal courtyards and vaulted beamed ceilings.  In 2016 La Reserva clubhouse and its L’Olive were refurbished with the creation of additional amenities including a swimmable lagoon, exceptional wellness spa, tennis club and children’s club.

The club has also welcomed veteran Spanish golf star Manuel Piñero to the team, to develop new aspects of training and play for its international members.

REAL CLUB DE GOLF SOTOGRANDE

This course was opened in 1964, but regularly features in Europe’s top 10 courses. It is situated close to the beach next to the River Guadiaro and Sotogrande marina. It is a private club, although green fee paying visitors are welcome (they are advised to book in advance).

The fairways are immaculate and include numerous mature trees of pine, cork, oak, palm and eucalyptus. There are also plenty of water hazards, particularly at the 7th, 12th 13th, 14th, 16th and par-3  17th. These lakes, together with the strong winds create a challenge for all levels.

VALDERRAMA GOLF CLUB

Home to the Volvo Masters (1988-96 and 2002-2008), the Ryder Cup (1997), the World Golf Championships (1999-2000), the Andalucía Masters (2010-2011) and Open de España (2016). –  Valderrama surpasses its reputation as Europe’s number one course.

Valderrama Golf Club

Designed by Robert Trent Jones and lovingly maintained by founder and original owner Jaime Ortiz Patiño for many years, this is one of the continent’s toughest challenges. The 4th hole, a par-5 of spectacular beauty, ends on a raised green next to a cascade of water meandering to a greenside lake. The famous par-5 17th features a green with bunkers at the back, and slopes down to an emerald lake. It is a favourite vantage point for spectators – and a bête noire for top championship players.
